Its been nice going back outside and exploring my environment, I hope to use my new skills and inspire the kids that I teach about the beauty of their community. It's easy to walk by things with tunnel vision, but this class encourages me to look around more and notice certain details that I didn't see before. I'm happy that I took this class to challenge my skills as a scientist and help explain various organisms with visuals instead of just words.

I had a fun time painting this experience at Big Sur, California. I love going by the coast, and I particularly like it when it's overcast and the water transitions into a darker color than its usual blue/green color. I'm excited to practice in different environments and experiment with all the colors in my palette. Landscape

The watercolors were easier than I thought, plus the brush was very useful when using different colors and blending it into the correct shade. I tried using my color palette at the beach, I think I got similar colors but I felt that I couldn't get the proper tone with certain colors. However, I think this was a good start in understanding how to paint with watercolors and encourages me to practice my shades. Watercolors

This was a bit of challenge, my main issue was finding the proper proportion and negative space since I started by the feet and then worked my way up.The patterns on the body was hard to measure since I should have added more space between the legs, but overall I think it helped me understand size and shapes. That was an interesting assignment, I tried to focus on the details of the animals and plants, but I had a hard time reconnecting the lines in the end. In the end of each of my drawings, I had a concept of what it could be, but if I gave it to someone, I doubt they would know what I drew. Overall, it allowed me to understand the structure of the subjects since each of them had different curves and shapes.

I looked at a plant that had palm-like leaves (I don't know what the name is) and noticed it's form and function. The leaves looked as though they were sliced up, causing them to have large gaps in between them, which could be due to the wind action since the leaves felt thin. Also, the stem was thick and curved downward to the roots, this could help the water slide down the leaves and reach the roots without any water being lost. It's interesting to see how plants are able to adapt to their environmental conditions and it seems that this plant was thriving since it was about 10 feet in height. Palm Leaf

I sat in my patio for this sit spot experience. I noticed that after staying still for a while, the animals were very active and interacting with each other through sounds. I focused more on the vegetation since I couldn't visually see the birds and the squirrels were too fast to get a quick sketch, but I happened to see a chrysalis on my milkweed so that was exciting to spot. I would like to practice more in secluded areas since a lot of my neighbors were passing by, which could have scared some organisms away. First Field Journaling

I thought it was easy to find certain points (highlights and core shadows), however I am having a hard time with my casting shadow. I'm not sure if it's due to the lighting since I couldn't find the reflected light. Doing the squint test was helpful to see the value scale, but I definitely need to practice more. Apple Drawing

I thought the overall structure wasn't too challenging, however the more I drew the photo, I noticed minor things that I didn't see before. For example, I didn't see that the feathers on the breast were brown in the beginning, I thought they were black since the wings had black lines. I think when I go nature journaling, I need to be patient and try to notice the details so that I can try to tell the difference from other species. Yellow Warbler

I was inspired to take this nature journaling class because I wanted to get back outside and notice the little things in nature. I used to do outdoor education, and I wanted to get back outside and learn more about the organisms in my community.
