DeniseParticipantToday I went for a drive. My favorite park, The Smokies is closed but I knew this one road with a pull off where I could get close. From my car I sat next to a mountain stream and just started to sketch. I thought I would concentrate on just one tree instead of the entire hillside bursting out into color. While sketching I noticed a butterfly go buy and a black crow that thought I had a snack for him. But what really caught my eye was a pair of Canada geese that fly by. Honk, honk, honk. In a split second they were there and gone. Thank you for teaching me to be patient and observant. My color technique will improve because I have a lifetime to work on it.in reply to: Tips to Keep You Going #685873

DeniseParticipantI’ll never forget the day I purchased my cork screw willow. It was just a twig in a pot. Every season I have watched it grow and twist some more. But now today just four years later what a surprise! We had torrential storms last night in East TN. Looking at my rain gauge I noted 5 inches of rain ! So I took a. Short walk around my property and spotted robins bathing in a puddle of water surrounding the cork screw willow. What a delightful scene to view on this blustery cool spring morning. Below is a quick sketch of the scene.in reply to: The Power of Reflection #684619

DeniseParticipantMy first drawing is on the left. Current one is on the right. I see improvement in use of color and some details. What this course taught me is priceless. I learned about negative space decades ago. Now I am constantly reminding myself on taking another look for the details. I reallyin reply to: See How Far You’ve Come #684580

DeniseParticipantFor a few years I have tried to photograph the tree swallows with no success. But today was different. While weeding quietly I noticed these birds accepted me and put on a show. They fed their young in the nesting boxes. They chattered with each other. I love the way they fly - just swoop on buy. I only see them in the Spring and the Fall. They are never at my bird feeders. I discovered later they are insect feeders. But what I love most about them is their color. Their dorsal side is this iridescent blue green color, while their belly is a vivid white. Sometimes when they sit on the fence they remind me of mini penguins because of their color contrast. This was a perfect Spring day in E. TN. Temps were in the 60’s with a slight breeze blowing.in reply to: Filling Your Sketches with Color #678780

DeniseParticipantWhile weeding outside in my garden, I noticed how delicate this plant is. It is only 2 inches across at the base and 6 inches tall. I really enjoyed its rosette form and the purple in the stems.in reply to: Filling Your Sketches with Color #669914

DeniseParticipantI found that I was checking the negative space more often. All the lines in the breast were difficult. You are correct my brain just wanted to squiggle.in reply to: Drawing What You See – Upside Down Drawing #653522

DeniseParticipantMy house wren was hiding on the opposite side of my bird feeder. I kept drawing the feeder and captured his motions when he appeared.in reply to: Capturing Behavior – Gesture Drawing #649779

DeniseParticipantIt is snowing in TN, so my comparison is with house plant and cut flower. This is a perfect exercise on comparison. I found a plant that grows in clumps and then a single strong stem supporting a clump flower head. I really enjoyed the comparison.in reply to: The Power of Comparison #649017

DeniseParticipantIt is a rainy day here, so I ran outside and grabbed a few leaves. I placed them under a light for shadow. I really went for the autumn color.in reply to: Opening Your Senses #648296
