OwenParticipantI live in upstate NY too and I have seen many rough legged hawks, it wouldn't surprise me if that was. I do think this is a rough legged hawk from the prominent white head and white streaks across the stomach i also see the brown band on the tail. If not that I think it could be a Red tailed hawk ( Abieticola)in reply to: I think this is a Rough-legged Hawk? #785013

OwenParticipantThis is a Wonderful story! It is a normal Foraging and feeding habit for ducks to hang in large groups of different species, especially in winter. But I don't get to see Hooded mergs all that often So this was wonderful too hear! OwenParticipantI Recently had this issue and I noticed the rounder head between the two and the lesser having the more rounded. also the greater is a tad bigger. It also depends on were you live and what might be more common in that area.in reply to: Help! What scaup is this? #774893

OwenParticipantAhh hard to tell I might say a morning dove or rock dove. It looks' darker to be a morning dove, but that could be lighting. My best guess is a Rock Dove. but something tells me you would have ruled that out. Good question Frankie!in reply to: Need Help IDing Bird! #774891
